The newly established Freshie Precinct is bringing a taste of the sandy shores of Waikīkī to Freshwater with Aloha Freshie. Featuring the very best of Hawaiian food, drinks, music, and entertainment, Aloha Freshie celebrates the special link between twin cities Waikīkī and Freshwater – thanks to the legacy of Hawaiian Olympian and surfer Duke Kahanamoku, whose surfboard demonstration at Freshwater Beach in 1914 put Freshwater on the map as the birthplace of Australian surfing.

At Aloha Freshie, Sydneysiders will be treated to a series of pop-ups at Harbord Diggers’ Ocean Terrace as Freshwater’s most loved businesses come together to celebrate the legacy of Duke Kahanamoku. Freshwater’s two-hatted fine-dining restaurant, Pilu at Freshwater, will be serving up piping hot shrimp scampi with their take on Hawai’i’s famous ‘Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck’, Mrs Jones The Baker will be presenting their delectable take on Leonard’s Bakery’s famous Malasadas (Hawaiian and Portuguese doughnuts), and Harbord Hotel will be also dishing out fresh tropical poké bowls and pork rolls.

To top it all off, there’ll be live Hawaiian music and Hula dancers.

5. Jeans for Genes Day

Jeans for Genes Day is celebrating 30 years! Doing Jeans for Genes is more than a mufti day, though. It supports the Children’s Medical Research Institute (a world-leading organisation right here in Sydney), which is helping to find cures for children.

1 in 20 Aussie kids faces a birth defect or genetic disease (things like cancer, cystic fibrosis and 6000+ rare diseases); that’s 12 children born every minute worldwide. Most have no treatment options, which is why research is essential. Supporting Jeans for Genes means giving these children and their families real hope for a healthier future.

Nowadays, you can still enjoy the fun of wearing denim and looking cool for a cause by getting your workplace involved or by hosting a morning tea or other event yourself. You’re the grown-up, so you can now take charge of the fun!

Double Donation Day: If organising something isn’t for you, you can still make a big difference to the 1 in 20 kids who need your help by donating on Jeans for Genes Day. If you donate on the website, your donation will be matched by a Jeans for Genes partner—that means $10 – $20 for double the impact!
